Pets definitely help us live longer and healthier. This is especially true for parents and we who live alone. Pets make wonderful companions and loyal. They are always there for us. However, this relationship is strained, and sometimes even broken when someone in the family develops an allergy to beloved pets.

Studies show that about 15% of the population suffers from allergies to dogs or cats, and about a third of people with allergies to cats in the household chooses to live with a cat despite the allergy. Some allergic pets live happily with for a year or two before an allergy starts.

Sometimes there are long-term health effects of allergies flair up again, especially for children. Repeated flare-ups can cause permanent lung damage in children.
